silent motion's sweet song in the reeds
wind-drawn cross-hatch stripes change change
muscle music draws stripes down the shadows
massive motion shifts silent in the reeds
she waits by the water, she drinks from the font
motion music plays hunger in the shadows
he waits by the water, he drinks from the font
hunger-drawn cross-hatch stripes change change
cross-hatch stripes drawn deep in supple skin
sweet sweet blood anoints the water
life's sweet death sung silent in the shadows
sweet sweet blood anoints the tongue
death's sweet life sung silent in the reeds

Not so much birthed as
aborted by something
absolute, it arrived
among them much unloved
by the shambling herd.
It suckled no milk,
thirsted some great otherness.
Nudged, it stumbled out
of the tremulous barn
wobbly-kneed, wandered
beyond the pale hedgerows
into open pasture
untroubled by thoughts
and chewed on shadows,
drank from a swirling shallow
cribbed in space.
It was found in a field
like a cloud-blotted moon,
withholding origins.
The older ones would read
omens of some other world
in a wormholed morn,
the odd-numbered nubs
on a flawed, unhallowed head.
