Pathways

1.

The road to Sommières across the garrigue,
that rises in deep green tiers

Sun,
mistral,
and bridges liable to be flooded

                     Mind that oscillates
                     between the metaphysical
and the pleasures of the body

2.

Greek blue
and ochre of Egypt

A piano slumbers
above hard, dry stones

The woman says,

"I dreamed of a life
upholstered in roses;
French spoken in the drawing rooms,
and tiger lilies always blossoming.

But now
the gardens of my life are dead.

I begin to wonder
If they ever lived."
