Women Becoming Poems:
Lorraine Schechter

Love Poem I

Rumi said, "Close the language door
and open love's window." So
we sit, and talk of history
and ideas, our eyes, all four
blue and full of light,
opening into vast spaces.

Instead of this talk, I'd like
to speak my heart, dear one,
in colors and sounds;
roseate reds rising, and
fathomless blues descending;
resonant tones,
                          cello songs
sounding around us
                                love words tongued
to the tips of your ears,
years and years betweeen us.

We step in: the door closes.
                                             Now
only the window and this tremendous light
enveloping us.
