Laura Nichols

White Sands

looks like
   An animal's backbone
stitched then stretched
   smooth

   the moon
seems to have
   already supervised
and made its choices here

One foot on each side may
         Split a street's
         Broken center line
         Or

         Break the rise
         Of a gray horse's
         Whiter vertebrae

scatters the need
   to knock
snow off a weighted branch

swings its legs
   over
