Magic
Today on the Pont des Arts,
with just the barest tips
of thumb and index finger,
a man pulled a kerchief out
of his chest pocket
and the wind took it
away, made it arc like
a swooping, veering gull
which dove for nothing
(there being little
to catch in this Seine).
Magic! cried the man, but
those of us there had also
felt the wind; we knew
how the trick was done.
Seemingly disappointed
the man walked away and left us
all believing the same thing.
