                  A Lonesome Tune
    Renku
Elizabeth Lamb and Miriam Sagan   5.25.01 - 8.26.01
[painting] detail from 'Blazing Sun'
Detail from
"Blazing Sun"

late at night
somebody whistles
a lonesome tune

el
   green apricots,
   marmalade cat

ms
pussy willows
beside the ditch
no air moves

el
   yellow roses obscure
   FOR SALE sign

ms
the moon
hidden, she waits
for light

el
   negligee hangs on a hook,
   shadows on rough floorboards

ms
no letters today
in the mailbox, a V
of geese points south

ms
   monsoon rains delayed
   the wildfire jumps the canyon

el
fiesta skirt swirls,
sound of high heels
clacking

ms
   the dancer, her eyes
   on a certain young man

el
blowing out
the candle--a kiss
in the dark

ms
   another blackout
   nobody's surprised

el
first snow on
the convento's crumbling walls--
abandoned mission

ms
   a pack rat's treasures
   behind the altar

el
slipping off the ring
in soapy dish water--
cloudy moon

ms
   circling the date
   her winter birthday

el
red
of the amaryllis
just opening

ms
   still on the easel
   his latest "still life"

el
Five Card Stud!
the gambler loves
this Painted Pony

el
   mesa, sagebrush, stars,
   dreamscape he gallops through

ms
a straight shot--
Glenrio to Gallup
on old Route 66

el
   imagining the ocean
   waitress serves coffee and fries

ms
surfers wait
for the big one--faded
travel posters

el
   blurred snapshot
   falls from the library book

ms
the latest
Harry Potter is what
she really wants

el
   playing solitaire trying
   to win before bed

ms
patchwork quilt
memories of so many
old loves

el
   sprigged cotton flowers
   next to the worn denim

ms
the lean shadow
of a scarecrow
autumn's moon

el
   the dead walk
with their trick or treat bags

ms
calendar picture
for the new year: canyon
of red rocks in snow

ms
   a silver music
   from the dripping eaves

el
pair of rubber boots
stuck alone
in the mud

ms
   a dragonfly wing
   early spring sun

el
San Ysidro Day --
wanting an angel to plow
dandelion field

ms
   a little girl
   her blue bird kite

el
