The Winter When My Grandson John Was Two

I went away
and when I came back
all the leaves had fallen
from the trees
and my grandson
was learning to place
verbs between nouns
and was therefore
moving naturally
farther away
from that dwelling
where nouns and verbs
together unsaid
commingle and fornicate
like man and woman--

trees tree

leaves leaf

balls ball

--as it was in the beginning
now and forever amen.
