Signs and Portents:
Twelve Poets from the Santa Fe Public Library Workshops
and the Institute of American Indian Arts

Editor's Foreword

The twelve poems presented here are from Signs and Portents, an anthology of poems from the Santa Fe Public Library workshops and the Institute of American Indian Arts. The anthology is the third and last collection funded by a Lila Wallace Reader's Digest Fund grant awarded to Arthur Sze.

Arthur partnered with the library over a three-year period to organize and present poetry workshops, bring guest poets to Santa Fe, and publish anthologies. This year's poet, Quincy Troupe, conducted a poetry workshop, a reading, and worked with Arthur's creative writing majors at the Institute of American Indian Arts.

Poems from Arthur's workshops, Quincy's workshop, and poems from Arthur's students were selected for the anthology which Arthur and I co-edited.

I would like to thank Arthur Sze, Joanne Werger, Santa Fe Public Library, and the Lila Wallace Reader's Digest Fund for their support of the original anthology. I would also like to thank Miriam Bobkoff, Santa Fe Public Library, for making this issue of the Santa Fe Poetry Broadside possible.
